Sierra Club Outing: Camp Hoover (Rapidan Camp)10:00 am – 2:30 pm
Camp Hoover, also known as Rapidan Camp, was the summer retreat established by President Herbert Hoover during his administration. The camp has recently been restored to its 1929 appearance and is an excellent reflection of not only its era, but also of President Hoover. The camp sits at the junction where Mill Prong and Laurel Prong meet to form the Rapidan River, a site chosen for its excellent trout fishing.
We’ll start hiking along the Rapidan Road from Big Meadows, then follow a horse trail downhill to the Mill Prong Trail, which leads to the camp. At the camp, we’ll spend some time looking around and having lunch. Total distance is about six miles (round trip), with an elevation change of about 1,000 feet. Hiking time will be 3-4 hours, depending on how much time we spend at the camp.
Meet at the entrance to the Big Meadows Visitor Center at 10:00 AM. To carpool from Harrisonburg, meet in front of Martin’s along Hwy 33 at 8:45 – we’ll leave from there at 9:00 AM sharp.

There is an admission cost to enter Shenandoah National Park. Outings participants are required to sign a Sierra Club release of liability waiver at the beginning of each outing. Pets are not allowed on Sierra Club outings.
