The Rockingham County / Harrisonburg Landfill is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Recyclables Accepted:

• Aluminum beverage cans
• Cardboard, chipboard
• Ferrous metals
• Glass food and beverage containers
• Household batteries (AA, AAA, 9V, etc., alkaline and rechargeable)
• Newspaper, magazines, telephone books, greeting cards
• Plastic (all plastic must be marked with a number on base, caps okay)
• Plastic Bags (e.g., Wal-Mart and Food Lion bags, must be clean and dry)
• Steel and bi-metal cans
• White goods, dryers, washing machines, stoves, freezers and refrigerators
• Used anti-freeze
• Used motor oil
• Goodwill - clothing and accessories, linens, toys, housewares, books and non-breakables

Notes:

Have bins for electronics and scrap metal. No wire accepted as scrap metal.
Told it is okay to leave caps on bottles although sign says otherwise.
Told NO pet food cans but this was unknown to an administrator contacted later.
Glass is not actually recycled but crushed, added to mulch and used for daily landfill cover.
All types of paper including junk mail can be put in newspaper trailer (consider removing address labels for security purposes).
Large pieces of numbered plastic should be broken down into smaller pieces to fit through sorting equipment.
